Chicken Hatching

Keeping chickens has become increasingly popular over the last couple of years and more and more people are interested in becoming self sufficient and are turning over part of their garden for the keeping of chickens.  A couple of chickens will give you a few fresh eggs every day, more than enough for a family. Chickens are relatively easy to look after and as long as they have sufficient space and a good Chicken Coop, the only other necessity is a good fence. Even if you live in an area where fox’s are not a problem, it is good practice to make sure the fencing is sufficient. Making sure the fencing is sufficient will ensure that the chickens cannot escape and also helps to keep out any other pests, such as rats and mice. Chickens need to be cleaned out once a week and the eggs collected every day. Chickens can be fed morning or evening and will appreciate a little corn to vary their diet.

The type of chickens you purchase will depend on what you are expecting from your chickens. If you simply want to have fresh eggs every day, it isn’t necessary to have pure bred chickens and hybrids will suffice. If you want to breed your chickens and are interested in hatching the eggs, you may want to do a little research into the types of chickens you may want. There are lots and lots of different breeds of chickens out there with different temperaments and natures.

Incubating your own chickens can be fun especially for the children and there are some really good started incubators on the market that will incubate no more than 8 eggs. This incubator is ideal for the beginner. There are also larger incubators on the market that can incubate up to and over 250 eggs. Incubating eggs is quite straightforward and you will need to follow the manufacturer’s instruction with the incubator as they all vary. Chicken Eggs take on average 21 days to hatch, give or take a few days and once they are hatched they will need to be moved to a separate are where they will need 95 degree heat to begin with.

Keeping your own chickens is both rewarding and fun and something the whole family can become involved in. With the right care and space, your chickens will live happily and provide you with some very fresh eggs indeed.
